The legend of the history of coffee says that the coffee berry was discovered by the Ethiopian goat herder Khaldi around the year 800. He observed the goats eating from a bush with red berries, after the goats had eaten the red berries they became very energetic and euphoric. Khaldi discovered the effect of the berries on the goats and started eating the berries himself. The berries were coffee berries and Khaldi experienced an invigorating effect after eating them.
In the southern Ethiopian highlands, where the Muslim Oromo people lived, they later began to make a drink with the shells of the coffee berries. This drink is called Cascara. The drink was also made in the Middle East, especially in Yemen. In the Middle East, however, the drink is called qishr.

It was only when the Sufi monks took the coffee berry with them to other Arab countries that people in other Arab countries began to use the coffee beans instead of the coffee berry shells to produce the well-known black coffee.
When coffee had spread to the other Arab countries, a coffee culture emerged where coffee became the gathering point, and in 1470 the world's first coffee house opened in Mecca.

It was not until several thousand years after the discovery of coffee that coffee reached Europe. In the Middle East, people did not want coffee to be smuggled to other countries, but the Dutch and Portuguese nevertheless managed to transport live coffee plants to their colonies in Sri Lanka, where the conditions were good for coffee production. This was the first time that coffee came outside the borders of Ethiopia and the Middle East, and coffee slowly spread to other countries.
Coffee came to Europe in 1615. Italian merchants imported coffee in Venice, and coffee quickly became popular, and throughout the 17th century, coffee spread to other European countries.
