Papaya fruit is a vitamin bomb – good for skin, hair and stomach
Papaya fruit is in the same family as melon. They both belong to the caricaceae family, which includes other well-known fruits such as cucumber, squash, and pumpkin. Papaya, like melon, is rich in water, and it is made up of about 88% water, which helps keep the body hydrated and maintains fluid balance. When papaya is ripe and ready to be eaten, it tastes amazing.
Papaya is native to Mexico and Colombia, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years. Due to its popularity and versatility, it has spread to tropical regions all over the world. I am from West Africa, where papaya was widely available during my childhood. We had papaya trees of various species that produced fruit every season. Papaya is relatively easy to grow and can grow up to 10 meters in height.
Why is papaya good for you?
Papaya is a nutritious fruit, rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The fruit also contains an enzyme called papain, which helps break down proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids. This improves protein digestion and relieves the digestive system. If you suffer from indigestion, papaya can be a natural choice for relief.
In addition to papain, papaya also contains high levels of the antioxidant beta-carotene, which not only promotes good vision but is also important for skin, hair and mucous membranes. Papaya contains the red pigment lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from damage caused by free radicals. This helps prevent chronic diseases and slows down the aging process.
The fruit is also rich in vitamins such as A, B, B9 (folate), C, E and K, as well as minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium and iron. Folate, which is also found in papaya, is particularly important during cell division and growth, e.g. during pregnancy. It also plays a crucial role in the production of red blood cells. A lack of folate can lead to anemia, a condition in which the body does not produce enough healthy red blood cells.
Where can I buy papayas?
Papaya is not only healthy to eat, but it is also used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. It is a popular fruit enjoyed by many. You can buy papaya in Danish supermarkets when it is in season, or from foreign greengrocers.
